THE RESTORATION CAFE, DALKEITH COUNTRY PARK

SUNDAY BRUNCH AT THE RESTORATION CAFE

The Restoration Cafe, what a lovely place to be brunching. We’ve had weeks, months, years of brunch practice to be fair and if brunch was in the Olympics…well, you know what we’re going to say.

Anyway, a brunch invite pinged in from the delightful folk at the Restoration Cafe at Dalkeith Country Park so we took them up on it and enjoyed a leisurely Sunday, brunching, walking and zipping down the flying fox in the kids adventure playground. Fresh air, vast open spaces yet only 20 minutes from the city centre. It’s a great escape from the city and has something for everyone.

First, the brunch. Don’t ask me anything until I’ve had a flat white.

OK, now we can get on with it…

If you love a cooked brekki you’ll be in very good hands. The full breakfast was plentiful. If we’re honest it was a little too meat heavy for us but the meat in question was top quality, delicious, and locally sourced (much of it from the Buccleuch Estates)  – haggis, sausage, bacon AND black pudding, it was all there. Poached egg was on point, a tomato and potato scone filled the plate. Missing, we felt, were beans and mushrooms and a teeny bit of green – spinach – would not have gone amiss. That aside it hit the spot plus there was toast on the side too! Mr M was happy.

Me? I opted for pancakes, it’s an obsession and I tend to have them wherever we go brunching plus make them at home too. The bar is high!  These were light and fluffy, and adorned with delicious bacon, black pudding,  and drizzled with a maple, apple and grain mustard dressing.

Other options including 3 different Eggs Benny, waffles with smoked salmon, a granola, fruit and yoghurt dish, plus the obligatory smashed avo.  All sound delicious.

Bellies full we headed across to Fort Douglas and literally flung ourselves around the playground with Mini Monkfish. Flying foxes, slides, tree houses, climbing walls, tunnels and bundles of fun. And ice cream too…

I then dragged them off around the Dalkeith estate to take in the fresh air, the views, the animals and a sneaky forage of the blackberry bushes. And of course we did a spot of retail therapy at the awesome Restoration Yard shop. If you’ve not been you must, but your bank balance will take a definite hit, you’ve been warned….
