HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s been a while….in fact, it’s been a long long while since we’ve updated the blog. Tonnes of reasons why, the main one being our continued [healthy] obsession with Instagram. Who needs words when a picture speaks volumes….
By ‘we’ we’re referring primarily to Mrs Monkfish who with her new iPhone 6S permanently attached to her hip she just can’t help snapping away at any given moment.
Here’s a small selection of the pics we’ve captured over the last few months to whet your appetite and to leave you wanting more during 2016. We’ve been eating and drinking a lot of late, both here (Edinburgh) and in other lovely places (most recently London), and I’m sure that will continue during the course of this year.
A particular highlight from December 2015 was dinner at Aizle, (St Leonard’s Street, Edinburgh), chef owner Stuart Ralston just gets better and better, we urge you to go ASAP. And probably second to that is our relentless mission to find the BEST coffee in Edinburgh, we’ve found a few great places you’ll be glad to hear but quite frequently venture down the coast a bit to the brilliant Steampunk which is always a pleasure. For an Edinburgh coffee hit the shout goes out to Artisan Roast Stockbridge where you can sip your chosen cup sat in a flower shop. You don’t get that in Costa.
Enjoy the gallery below in a ‘Vision On’ kinda way…hit PLAY, you know you want to 🙂

You may have realised by now that we really do love David Loftus and his amazing food photography. We stumbled upon this little film just before Christmas (ignore the Christmas references….) and found it not only gives a few of our secrets away but we love the fact he shoots the food from above which is usually our preferred way of doing it too. If you’re not on hipstamatic yet then get to it, your food photography prowess will change for the better!
Yesterday afternoon Mrs Monkfish and Paul Copper Mango ran a #tweetwhatyoueat workshop at Mark Greenaway’s restaurant on North Castle Street, Edinburgh. What a great afternoon! It was a very relaxed and informal session, lots of fun was had with lovely food to photograph. Plenty of new friendships were struck and everyone went away happy and with a few top tips up their sleeves to boot. We talked lighting, apps, post production apps, Instagram, composition, overhead shots, it was hashtag FUN!
Here are the pics that Mrs M took during the afternoon…..
If Edinburgh is ready for us we’re planning on running it again soon!!

Stacked; overhead with Hipstamatic; overhead with Instagram. Various choices of filters and lenses, I can’t reveal ALL my secrets…these cookies were crying out to be stacked (and chomped).
I (Mrs M) have been baking my favourite cookies this morning…not to eat…oh no…just to take photos and experiment with Hipstamatic, Instagram et al. There’s a growing number of amaaaazing food photographers on Instagram and I’m wanting to be up there as one of them. I’ve got a way to go but I know what I like, I just need to be able to produce what I like..
Tomorrow I’m running a Tweet What You Eat workshop at Restaurant Mark Greenaway alongside Paul Copper Mango Johnston. In the space of two hours we’re going to bombard the participants with clever apps, effects, lighting, filters, tableware, composition. It’s going to be great fun. If anyone uses a flash they’ll be ejected toute de suite 😉
If it all goes rather swimmingly, which I’m sure it will, we’ll be running other workshops later in the year so watch this space. The Monkfish Mango collaboration will be out in force.
