CUCKOO’S BAKERY, EDINBURGH

I think you can safely say we like our cake here at monkfish towers…doesn’t really matter what form that cake may take, cupcakes, cakes to share, cakes that will feed the entire city of Edinburgh in one sitting….as long as they are quality, home-baked and completely delicious, we’ll eat them.

GIVEAWAY!! From the generosity of Monkfish Towers combined with the lovely Cuckoo’s Bakery we’re doing a giveaway, yay! If you follow us on Twitter and Retweet our competition tweets which will go out on Wednesday and Thursday this week then you can win a box of 6 Mother’s Day cupcakes delivered to your door! More about that later, first up a review of our visit…

When Ms Monkfish was asked to sample a few cupcakes at Cuckoo’s Bakery certain criteria had to be met….could she phone a friend (check), could she ask for seconds (urm, clearly….check), could she have a nose in the kitchen to see the cake in ‘action’ (check). Game on, with Sister Monkfish in tow the Bakery was about to be taken by storm.

First up a quick history of the Bakery. Cuckoos opened their doors on Valentines Day 2011 and have sold 50,000 cupcakes in the last twelve months. Saturday can see upwards of 200 cupcakes being sold and occasions such as Burns Night, Valentines Day, Mother’s Day and Easter add plenty more sales to the cupcake quota.

So, you thought cupcakes were ‘rather last year’….it seems not, Graham and Vidya who run the Bakery just can’t bake them quick enough and the inventiveness behind the flavours keeps things exciting for them and the customers. Every Friday they have a cocktail cupcake and favourites such as Death By Chocolate, the classic Red Velvet and more recent additions The Big Dipper and Eton Mess keep the punters wanting more.

During our visit we sampled a Raspberry and White Chocolate, a Red Velvet, and a Black Bottom….one can safely report in that they were all rather splendid, the sponge being extremely light in texture, the flavours doing exactly what was said on the tin and the icing being on the right side of ‘not too much’.  There’s nothing worse than 10cm of icing on a 4cm sponge, these were spot on.
SO, BACK TO THE CUCPAKE GIVEAWAY!!!
With Mother’s Day just around the corner one of you lucky monkfish fans you can win a gift box of 6 cupcakes, which includes the following cupcakes… Violet, Raspberry & White Chocolate, Chocolate Truffle, Apple Crumble & Custard, Chocolate Dipped Strawberry and Sea Salted Caramel. The gift box also includes gift wrapping with ribbon and a greetings card with personal message.

N.B. The box can be delivered to an Edinburgh address (within the city bypass) only so sorry for all of the monkfish fans out with the city walls……feel free to pick up if you live further afield though!
